Post subject:  To Much Rudder Correction
OK HOBIE GURUS , if I Put a sail rudder on my 07 OUTBACK will it help with tracking , it seems that I'm allways correcting my rudder when trolling , cruising around or making my way to the fishing grounds .

I think all the Gurus would say definitely yes, absolutely; furthermore, they would say it's the best bang for the buck in the Hobie catalog! And I would agree!

The sailing rudder is a bit harder to work with the Twist n Stow (because of its added weight), but gives much better controllability and responsiveness on any boat that you can put it on! 8)

If you install, please post how it works out for you. I have an '05 OB and continually make tracking corrections.

Only the Twist&Stow rudder system has the larger upgrade - the original system doesn't allow for a larger blade ugrade.

I'm sorry to hear the upgraded rudder will only fit the twist & stow.
Having said that and both my Hobie's are 07 so I can continue.

I bought the sailing rudder for my Revo. As other posts have said it is the best upgrade you can make for the cost.

It made a big difference. At first I thought if I was peddling fast enough I could flip it if I turned left too quickly.
Now that I have a sail it gets a work out.

I am not too sure what you guys mean by twist and stow. I believe I have a 02-05 model OB and would like to know if the sail rudder will fit ? Thanks.

The Twist & Stow rudder, when pulled out of the water, lays flat on top of the back of the kayak.

I looked at a new 06 Sport and it did not have the Twist & Stow so I bought the 07. Glad I did.

Anyone retrofitted the new Twist-n-Stow rudder to replace the older style pull up rudder? I would like the larger sailing rudder but unfortunately I have the earlier rudder on my tandem. I have seen the mods made by Kepnutz but would like to get the advantages of the Twist-n-Stow as well. Comparing the old and new it looks like the plastic mouldings at the rear of the kayak have changed to fit the Twist-n-Stow.

I instaled the sailing rudder on my 07 OUTBACK today , after the install a friend(07REVO) and I went out for a test run/fish , and let me tell you wat a differnce it makes pedaling to and from the fishing grounds and on the troll , I only had to make a few corrections to stay on any given course even when the wind pick-up , man I'm I happy with this mod. .

..... oh yea she truns on dime now also .... :D

... I highly recomend this rudder up-grade to any one ... :P

I was considering the bigger rudder for my new revo. The dealer said it puts too much pressure on rudder lines/etc. He advised me not to do it unless I was going to sail the revo. There were pros and cons to it.

This has been said before but some dealers just don't understand what they are selling. Why would Hobie sell the sailing rudder if it would destroy the rudder system? That's not how they do business.

I installed the sailing rudder on my Revo. It makes a big, positive difference in handling. It puts a little more stress on the stowing part but I haven't had any problems. Go for it. You will be glad you did.

I was concerned with the twist and stow action ,, but I tryed it a few times during the day and had no problem stowing the sailing rudder it was as easy as the stock one ... DO IT ,, its a great improvement over the stock rudder ,, you wont se sorry ... :P

Technically, the dealer is not wrong. The Sailing Rudder weighs twice that of the standard rudder and, in most cases, places an extra strain on the T & S system if you were to "dead lift" it. Nevertheless, I think he has given you bad advise. It sounds like he has very limited or no experience operating the sailing rudder. By wiggling the rudder control while lifting, with everything functioning properly, there is no strain on the system and it works quite well. In other words, it's easy to adapt to.

Turning with the rudder, there is no issue. Your boat response will improve dramatically. In fact, it should be your first modification. I've been using it exclusively for over a year now and wouldn't recommend anything less! There is really no functional reason not to have one. 8)

For anyone who DOESN'T have the new Twist & Stow rudder and wants better performance, take a look at this rudder sleeve Kepnutz recently made for his standard rudder (you have to scroll down a bit). I think he's real happy with it. 8)
