Post subject:  Safety of Nalgen water bottle

Just bought an Outback and love it- I have already learned much from these forums and expect to contribute my 2 cents in the future. As I was washing the supplied water bottle for the first time and I hear a story on the safety of plastic and Nalgen bottles in particular - which is what I suspect Hobie is supplying. They also said Type 1 bottles are the only ones that are safe. The Hobie water bottle has no markings. Do I use it or not?

FYI - the decision is yours

Abstract:
"Nalgene, ...... will stop using the plastic because of growing concern over one of its ingredients.. . . The decision .. . . was made after reports that the Canadian government would declare the chemical bisphenol-a, or BPA, toxic. Some animal studies have linked the chemical to changes in the hormonal system. . . On April 10, the American Chemistry Council, which says that there is no evidence suggesting that BPA has an adverse impact on people, asked the Food and Drug Administration to review the chemical. . . In March, Nalgene also introduced a line of bottles made from a relatively new plastic from the Eastman Chemical Co., Tritan Copolyester, that shares most of polycarbonate's properties, including shatter-resistance, but is made without BPA."

When googled you do not get that much hype about ill effects. :) This really is not an issue. Enjoy your bottle.

But, all kidding aside, I think the media is getting a little histeric about the problem. I have already heard one news report saying just that -- that the danger is too minimal to usher in any panic. So don't thow your bottles out just yet. Just don't ween your baby on one. As soon as things calm down, we'll be getting more balanced and accurate stories regarding this.

Of course, if tomorrow morning most of your water bottle drinkin' neighbors start dropping like flies, then it's a perfect time to panic!
