So I decided to use a heat gun to soften the old luff track. That did the job Now the question is what to do with a 6" piece of the groove that cracked off like peanut brittle....Seriously it snapped and cracked off like I've never seen before wasn't even using a lot of force. Not sure why Hobie decided to use a luff track for the H16 on a different profile comp tip on the T2?

Also, What is the glob of epoxy / filler at the connection of the comp tip and aluminum section for. When I popped out the luff track it was there under the track. Is this for leveling? Do I need to install more with the new track? Please help with this. As well, the existing track goes under the rim of the mast head. Am I supposed to remove the mast head to install the new track. ughhh...

The glob of epoxy or filler is from the dealer gluing the two pieces together after shipping. It really bad that a piece of your comp tip broke off, only thing I can think of would be to use a little epoxy adhesive to put it back in place. I know that would glue the track in place but as you learned, a heat gun will soften it up.

Yes, the groove is fragile. There are instructions in the support area.

Same as the wave except for the profile. The Hobie 16 was the first boat to have a CompTip. Every boat after that is the same as the Wave shown in this instruction. The technique is the same though.

The groove repair may be a challenge, but is is only putty... no glass fiber.

Matt,
I have some west epoxy. Should I just mix up some west system with micro filler and make a putty? Would that be compatible with the mast construction?
Thanks!

I think so. Maybe Matt Bounds has done something like this? Matt?

Rough up the lip for better adhesion for sure. When you re-install the track. Start on the repaired side and force over to the opposite.

UPDATE.......I used west epoxy system with fast cure. I then pieced together to tiny little pieces that broke away like a little puzzle and fit them together and epoxied in place. I then added micro filler to the epoxy creating a thick putty. Then filled any gaps in the pieced together groove area. Finished by sanding down to match existing profile. Repair came out super solid and new luff track snapped back in. Seems to be a solid repair. Remember to file down the track at aluminum connection to match up and chamfer the tip of the luff track so the sail will not bind.
