| Post subject: | New help with solo righting system |
Just picked up our first hobie, 1982 H18, and it came with the solo righting system. We asked the guy that we bought it from what the extra wires were for, as I had no clue, and he didn't have a clue either, he was the second owner. From researching on here as best as I could, and in looking at the Hobie catalog, I figured what these three rigging wires are for, now just need to figure out how they are used. Got the side wires that affix onto the shrouds, as they release to form an "extension" to the side stays. The question is, how do I fasten that longer 3' (or so) cable to keep the mast in place and to where? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

What I think you have is the "Upright Solo Rightlinhg System". Hobie Catalog number 1264. I have it on my HC-18. Can't say I've ever you'd it. Luck for you I hadn't cover the boat for the winter. The one end connects to the shroud adjuster with a pin ad retaining ring. ; Mine is below the the pin for the shroud. The Quick release pin is used for the shroud. The other end fastens over the shroud wire using a shackle. Extend the shroud by releasing the Quick pin on the skyward hull to help right the boat. Below are some photos installed. John, Thanks for the reply. I have the sidestay wires on the shrouds like you indicate and had those figured out. My real question is; Where does that single longer wire get hooked? I believe it is used to keep the mast from slipping off of the mast step, but just not sure where it connects to keep the mast in place as the mast is relieved from vertical from use of the sidestay extensions. I am not the guru on this - my buddy Pierre is, he sails a H18SX. The pictures above clearly show the 'regular' and 'extended' shrouds. Great pictures, BTW. The longer piece of wire you were talking about is attached to the one diamond wire end, down around the dolphin striker, and back up to the other diamond wire end. At least that's how I remember it from about a year ago. Pierre may have a small fairlead riveted to the mast near the diamond wire. No, wait, that's what we did on a Club H16 mast when we upgraded that training boat to shroud extenders. (Easier for rookies to right the H16). The point is that once you release tension on the mast by extending the shrouds, you have to have something to hold the base of the mast onto the casting. That's what the longer wire does. If you can't figure out the positioning, at least lash the bottom of the mast in place, like the H14 guys do. They tend to run their rig loose, and if they capsize, there is little to hold the mast on the base, so they use the unused end of the main halyard to do that. Am I correct, Mr. Bounds and Mr. Bisesi? |

I have one of those things too .... I bought it for all the quick pins at a "Going Out of Business Sale" Now I'm going to "bust your bubble" and maybe offer a better solution .... First I could never make that system work right because w/ the boat capsized I couldn't climb up the boat and get the sidestay clevis pin out to extend the shroud w/o driving the boat into the turtled position ..... and you can not right a H18 from the turtled position singlehandly ..... Note: I DO NOT recomemend using "Quick-Pins", in place of "Clevis Pins" at standing rigging points on a H18, as I've seen too many quick pins fail to hold and then the rig can come down !!!! I did use a quick-pin to attach my boom to the mainsail ... but the hole in the U-bracket on the boom wore a little large and in the middle of a race ... BANG ... the boom fell off the mainsail (powerboat chop while running downwind) ... now that Quick-Pin is gone.... Solution: I saw a video from a Hobie Fleet in Arizona or New Mexico and there was this H18 sailor righting his H18 singlr-handedly .... I looked again ...... it seems he has a paddle w/ a long fiberglass handle, which he inserts into the daggerboard well between the daggerboard and the well .... he then w/ his righting line just stands on the paddles handle (4'-5' lg???) .... and the boat "pops" up. I WAS IMPRESSED!!!! I've never tried it but it worked very simply in the video .... BRADZILLA- It was in a video from your fleet's fun day last year ??????Can you please get us more information, who was this person, can we talk to him, and WHAT exactly he used and the method to use it. John Latimer- In your picture I noticed something .... a MAGNUM Seat Trailering Support ..... Would you be so kind as to show us a better pic of that and list what materials you constructed it out of, please Sail Flat, Sail Fast, Sail Safe |

Harry, check out the Beachcats website, Photo Albums, Wing Supports. There is a picture of Magnum and SX wing cradles for trailering. I have made a set out of PVC pipe. Thy work great. |

Thanks DVL .... My buddy Scott and I both have a set of the "origonal" aluminum Magnum Wing Trailering Supports for our boats but they are 20yrs old and have some issues ..... So I should go to beachcats.com ????? Let me go have a 'Look-See" ..... Thanks Again |

I first saw this design on "The Beach Cats" technical photo album. http://www.thebeachcats.com/index.php?module=pictures&g2_itemId=11711 Simple construction using 1-1/2" PVC pipe, a doulbe wye fitting, 2 Tee fittings, and some bungee. The site above details the design. Mine work great.
