Hi I am a long time hobie 16 sailor but saw a for sale ad for a 1989 hobie 18 magnum and that got me thinking a newer boat might be nice. My first ? is do the wings fold up for trailering or do they have to be taken off.? Also do the dagger boars slide up if you hit a shallow spot while under sail? the lake I do most sailing on has quite a few shallows....thanks ..... Jay |

Wings fold up for trailering. BTW, very comfortable sailing a boat with wings. Daggerboards do not slide up when you hit a shallow spot. The boat just stops or slows down depending on how hard the bottom is. A Hobie 18 is the best boat Hobie ever made but then agan I a little biased  .

I hope to have a different boat by spring so I have a few more ? would the H18 be a good boat to sail with 3 people, Can two people right the boat? Me at 220lbs and a 150lbs second person. I have been sailing my H 16 for almost 30 years but have never been around the 18's Thanks....Jay |

Righting an 18 with two people should be no problem. My son and I weigh less than the crew/skipper weight that you stated and we have no problem righting our magnum. We got an 18 because I wanted to sail (leisure) with my whole family (four of us). Obviously the performance is reduced with 4 people but it is comfortable sailing. The magnum wings lets use spread out and have more room when leisure sailing. Three people should be no problem and the 18 will still move quit well with that load. With a good wind you can still easily fly a hull with 3 people, if you manage you weight distribution right. |

That was kind of my plan but I will not sell the 16 till I have another boat, now just need to find a nice 18 with in a days drive, I hope......Jay |

Contact Hobie dealers and ask what they have on consignment and call them regularly. Be careful with eBay since a boat is something you'd rather see before committing to. After your first ride on a H18 Magnum in 8-12kts of breeze .... 1) You WILL return w/ a "Sh_t-Eating-Grin" from "Ear to Ear" ..... 2) You WILL imediately sell your tried and true H16 ..... 3) You will find a H18/H18Mag to purchase ..... and you will be willing to travel HOURS to get it !!!!!!
