I finally decided to replace the bushings in my rudder gudgeons and discovered that the new black bushings (part #?) don't fit a 1991 18SX's rudder gudgeons. I've thought about cutting/shaving/drilling them to fit, but before I do does anyone have tips? The bushings in there now are the black bushings came with the boat and resemble the new ones I have, but clearly they, too, were re-worked to fit the gudgeons. I've tried the white bushings but something about those don't work, but I've forgotten what. |

Make sure the holes in your rudder castings are 7/16" in diameter. If not drill them out to fit the bushings. |

Thanks, Jeremy. The bushings fit neatly into the castings already, but they don't fit over the gudgeons. When the bushings are in the castings they are about 1/8" too narrow in the hole and 1/8" too thick at the top, thus my shaving them down and widening the hole a smidge. |

Are you sure you've got the correct bushings? If my memory serves me, the Hobie 20 (the boat that first used the beefed up black bushings) used 5/16" diameter rudder pins whereas all the other boats use a 3/8" diameter rudder pin. So if you're trying to use a 20 bushing on an 18 rudder casting, the I.D. of the bushing is going to be too small. Could be your problem. sm |
