Post subject: | NEW MEMBER . H 18SX SMASHED MAST |
HOWDY BEACH BUDS, I LIVE IN NEW SMYRNA BEACH, FL AND DRIVE A 18 SX. I KEEP MY SLED ON THE BEACH. TWO WEEKS AGO A HARD BLOW CAME OUT OF THE NIGHT AND TOSSED HER DOWN THE BEACH. THE MAST PAID. THE SLIGHT BEND CAN BE FIXED, HOWEVER I MIGHT HAVE A NON-FIXER. WHEN THE MAST HIT THE SAND THE SPREADER WAS PUSHED IN AND MADE A SMALL DENT WHERE IT IS CONNECTED TO THE MAST. HAS ANYONE SEEN THIS TYPE OF DAMAGE? IF I DO NOTHING AND GO SAIL IT COULD FAIL SINCE THE D WIRES MEET THERE AT THE SPREADER. I LIKE GETTIN OUT AND USIN THE SPURS SO MAYBE A NEW MAST IS THE ANSWER. ANYONE GOT A HOBIE 18 SX MAST FOR SALE? THANKS, PAYNE |

Good luck finding a new SX mast, as the boat is somewhat rare. If push comes to shove you might consider putting a standard 18 mast on the boat, but you'll need new standing rigging and sails to do it. |

[email protected] is his e-mail.I don't feel right about posting peoples phone digits on open domain.Tell him I referred you. Also check with a dealer to be certain this would work.I dont know if the extra foot of mast is above the standard tang up top or if you would have to put another rigging tang on above the standard 18 tang.Other than that I believe it is plenty long enough.I have heard that it is very pricey to ship a 30 ft piece and very hard to get it delivered in good condition.Good luck!! Now I'm not sure about this and I would check w/ Matt Miller at the factory .... But it maybe possible to convert a "all aluminum" H18 SE mast into a H18SX mast w/ comptip. The standard H18 w/o comptip is long enough to cut appropriately .... install the SX comptip but I believe the spreader location maybe different. Hey Matt, (all knowing things Hobie) ... is this possible????? Harry |

Skipshot,I think you are missing the fact that The all aluminum 18 se mast is 2 and a half to three ft. longer than an 18 se mast that has been converted .therefore there should be plenty of aluminum length .It is the standing rigging and diamond wires that are the issue, but both those can be easily fixed with a rivet gun. shawn |

I was racing H18's when the "Comptip" program was initiated ..... and they chopped off a good length section of the top of my aluminum mast and installed a "comptip". I took some measurements once and I thought that it was possible to convert a "standard" all-aluminum H18 mast to an H18SX mast which was produced from the start w/ a comptip in the USA ... but I never proceeded any further .... How long is the aluminum section of a "SX" mast??? .... the comptip??? .... overall length??? |

It cannot be done! The SX mast is longer between the diamonds. You will not find a used SX mast in working condition. You are correct about your mast failing with a dent at the spreaders. Where did the crazy statement that an SE solid mast was longer than a comptip installed mast come from? They are the same length. You cut off exactly what is being replaced. I would suggest replacing the SX mast with a Tiger mast. You would need to change the ball and either convert the head attachment on the SX sail or buy a used Tiger main. The solid Tiger mast will perform better as well. I'm not certain about standing rigging but I think the hounds are in a similar location if not exactly the same as the SX. A used Tiger mast could possibly be sourced as well. The Tiger has a better spreader system and diamond system than the SX as well. Good luck! |

Quote: It cannot be done! The SX mast is longer between the diamonds. A stock, all-aluminum 18 mast is 28 feet long (give or take). The comptip is roughly 8 feet. Leaving a 20 foot aluminum "stump". The SX mast is roughly 18" longer than a stock 18 mast. The aluminum stump should then be 21 foot 6 inches. So all you would need to do would be to find an all aluminum standard 18 mast, remove the spreaders, upper diamond wire fittings, and mast tang. Pull the old comptip from your broken mast and cut the all-aluminum mast to match the length of the SX-18 aluminum section length (approximately 18" above the existing hounds). Then install your old comptip. Relocate the spreader hardware to match the SX locations. Last, plug the old rivet holes with aluminum rivets and silicone (aluminum rivets so there is no corrosion issue). sm |

Now that's what I was talking about ....... Next you need to invest in two "Tie-Down" sand anchors. For a sandy beach get the 36"lg w/ a 4"disc. Availible at any Arborist Supply Store .... should be $12-$15 ea Harry |

+1 What SRM said. The cut length for the standard 18 is 20' 5 3/8" The cut length for the SX is 21' 10 7/8" SX/H18 comptip part # is 60611100 |
