The poll on apparent wind got me thinking. I don't think I'm unique in reading the water surface to gauge the wind direction and speed. And gust factor.

The water tells you what is coming (about to happen).
The gauge tells you what is happening.

you gain an advantage racing if you understand what the water surface is showing you. gusts, holes, downdrafts and shifts. In addition to knowing how the wind behaves in the land/water transition zones.

Beginning sailors watch the scenery

I think the last time I had a windvane on a boat was 1973. I also get a kick out of golfing buddies throwing grass up in the air to see how hard and which direction the wind is blowing.
