hi folks- well, i'm still shopping for a boat. what the owner thought was a 1988 is actually 1985. i havent seen this boat in person, but they claim its in super shape. there is a large graphic on the side in the pic-cant tell what it says would all of them be redglue hulls for 1985, and even if there is no visible stressing under the front crossbars, do i need to add the 4 bolt reinforcement plates? I'm fairly certain the answer is 'yes' all '85s would be red glue. It's extremely easy to verify though. Take a flashlight and small mirror with you, pop open the port and look inside up at the hull/deck seam- you will see red glue squirting out from the seam. If the crossbar reinforcements aren't installed, I'd say there's a pretty high chance that some level of stress cracks will be visible after 25 years. But even if you're lucky and the boat is totally clean under the lip, I'd still put in the plates. It's 70 bucks to do the complete front crossbar which is super cheap insurance in my book- there's absolutely no good reason that I can think of to not do put in the new parts. The installation is relatively easy and it provides a good excuse to pull the front crossbar off and give it a good inspection for corrosion and cracking as well. sm |

The plates are highly advised. You have to remove the inboard and outboard bolt, so tension on the tramp would be a problem. |

Just purchased my first Hobie - a 1986 h18 and came across this post. Could you point me in the right direction on where to get the reinforcement kit and instructions? Thanks |

This is my first post in this forum. I'm quite close of becoming an HC owner. The next few days will show... Do you suggest putting in the reinforcement plates also on a 1991 HC 18 Formula (prob. European build)? Thanks in advance, Johannes |
