Post subject: | My H-18 Ran aground! Rudder casting broke -Help |
I have an 1985 H-18 and broke the lower rudder casting when the rudder struck ground. The boat has had many modifications by previous owners over the years. How do I tell if it has the "old" pre-1987 castings or the post-1987 castings by looking at them? It sounds like Hobie doesn't supply replacement parts for the old style any more and requires purchase of a $500 "conversion kit." OOOOOuch! It may be a long time before I'm sailing again. If they are the old style, does anyone know where to get a replacement part? What about used parts? Please help! |

I have seen both on eBay for a reasonable price. the other option is buying a second used boat and combining the best of both for an uberboat and then parting out the remnants. |

Post subject: | Old vs New style rudder castings |
The main difference is that the new style allow one to adjust the rake of the rudder, check out the adjuster plate on the top of the upper casting/arm. Also there is a set screw at the bottom inside of the lower casting. Over the years, our Club has had to TIG weld ALL old style castings on our four H-18's due to similar problems. They are all doing fine. Find a good MIG/TIG welder, show him both the 'good' and the 'broken' castings. You'll be okay, not cosmetically pretty, but functional. |
