| Post subject: | Hobie 18 mast step question |
After I raise my mast, I have to use a punch and hammer to knock the pin out of the mast step so the mast can rotate. After sailing, I have to use a hammer to knock the pin back in. My last 18 was not like this, so I have decided there is something wrong. My gut says the mast bearing must be worn down, yet it looks fine. Any toughts? Collin |

Collin, First, make sure your mast pin is straight (I know pretty obvious). Second when teh mast is up and the pin is out look to see if you can rotate it or rake it to make the holes line up. Third, make sure that the mast base is seating ontothe mast step fully. I notice that when I raise my mast the mast base hinge has some slop in it so when the mast raises the mast base does not alwyas fully seat on it's own. Also, you may need to make sure the mast is straight up when looking at it from the bow or stern. If your hole and pin clearance is pretty tight the mast being slightly off from vertical could cause a problem. You can always use a smaller diamter pin. Don't go too small but you get the idea. |

I've noticed ours will need a "helper", going in and out, when we're not set up for heavy air, which is forestay as deep as possible in the bridle (read no rake) and shrouds as tight as possible. All other looser rig settings you would need to stand on the tramp and push the mast forward and possibly side to side to remove or insert. It 's much quicker and easier for us to have a punch and hammer in the trunk. |
