Just brought home a new to me '81 H18 and wondering what's the best cleaning goo to use on anodized black mast (with comp tip) and boom. Both are faded and blotchy. Not looking to make them perfect, but clean them up and restore a little darkness and shine. Wash and wax 'em and call it done or is there something better?

USE A PRODUCT CALLED PENETROL. JUST WIPE ON A THIN COAT WITH A LINT FREE RAG AND LET DRY. PARTS WILL SHIN LIKE NEW. IT'S ACTUALLY A PAINT ADDITIVE, GET IT A HOME DEPOT, ACE, OR PAINT STOR

comptip and rudders (like the hulls) are fiberglass and harmed by direc UV exposure....
wash all... wax the hulls (debate whether to wax hulls as the water beading increases surface tension or something which some say will slow you down... but one blown tack will cost you more dearly....)....

Anyway... I'd recommend a good cleaning and wipdown with acetone on the rudders and comptip.
Then spray the rudders and comptip with some rustoleum enamel paint to coat/protect... semi-glass looks great, will last a few seasons... total cost acetone, papertowels, paint.. $10.

(if the penetrol doesn't work out... just clean everything w/acetone and shoot a nice coat of enamel too... worked great when I replaced my black rearcrossbar with a clear one...)

Congrats on the boat! Happy sailing.

I've heard of this product, but it's hard to find in Canada apparently. I've been to Home Depot(stopped carrying it years back), Canadian Tire, Rona, Lansing, specialty paint stores (apparently it's good for oil paints), little home repair shops near me and nobody has it.

I've used it and it does improve the appearance, at least temporarily, but it doesn't take much and it isn't expensive.
I tried looking on eBay (where I buy most everything) and they don't have any listed.

I would not use acetone on a comp tip. The luff track is plastic and acetone WILL eat it. Soap and water followed with Penetrol is the way to go!
