| Post subject: | Hobie 18 righting line? |
Well, went for our first dip, righting line was way short, not able to put enough weight on to right ship. What is recomended diameter and length? Also, seemed that attachment to front cross bar not best place to center pull from? We had about 320 lbs combined weight, however with the length of the rope we were not able to both pull together. |

Sometimes you need just pure wind to help that 18 over. I use thick rope (easier on the hands) 1/2", 5/8". I tie one to each crossbars ends where it meets the tramp. Again I do this for the front and back bars. That way I can use both or have one person on each. They are long enough to tie to the x-bar ends plus another foot or so on each end. Make it longer, you could throw some knots in there for grabbing. Try it near shore without sails for fun. |

On my 'new to me' H18, the previous owner had what I am hoping is a suitable rig for righting. Four 5/8" lines - one at each crossmember corner - each ~8 feet long - tied at the rear crossmember and attached with a carabiner to the dolphin striker at the front crossmember. Plan A is to yank 'em loose, pull them over the uppermost hull when on her side, stand on lower hull and my crew and I to each grab one at knotted end and lean back to right her. I'm ~215lbs and crew's ~165lbs Plan B is to tie the ends together making a loop and again with both of us on lower hull, lean back to right her, holding on to the newly tied loop with the lines attached/routed as above. So tomorrow is launch day and 10-15mph winds are likely. Would love a confirmation or opinion on above righting rig/scheme before I subject my crew (aka wife) to a 'never doing this again' day resulting in a permanent loss of said crew and a night spent sleeping on the couch. ~BradS |
