| Post subject: | Roller furler |
I bought an 18 last week and am getting it ready to sail. I've never been around a roller furling jib before and am not sure if my roller works, it's not set up on the boat yet. I assume that it would wind itself back up? I can spin it in either direction freely. Is it busted or do I just not know how it works lol. |

It does not wind itself back up automatically. You uncleat the jib sheets and pull the line coming out of the furler to roll up the sail. You uncleat the furler line and pull the jib sheet to unfurl the sail. I suggest you download the H18 assembly manual available on this site. It explains how to set up and operate the jib furler. sm |

Thanks. I understand now. I downloaded and read the manual but for some reason it didn't make sense until I read after reading the replys. |

you may find that one direction works better than the other i think mine winds up clockwise. (furling in) |

To furl jib while under sail you need to hide the jib by bearing off, so that you can furl the jib easily. Do not head up wind. Practice first. Life's little pleasures with the 18. |

It's also really important to let off the mainsheet. If you're sheeted in tight, the upper swivel probably won't spin which will cause the system to bind. sm |

The line enters on the port side of the drum. If you furl the sail in the wrong direction the line will take a hard right turn when entering which will cut the drum over time. Detach the clew blocks... Wind the forestay / drum clockwise when looking down on it, but be sure the sail is NOT furled when the line is fully-wound (un-wind the sail). Or... with the drum unwound... detach the clew blocks and wrap the sail around in the same clock-wise direction. Then re-attach the clew blocks. |
