I am starting a list of what I want to do my '84 18SE this coming off season. Two items are to replace the cleat on the boom that holds the Rotation Arm line and do something to improve the cleating of the jib furler line instead of the current V-cleat.

Any suggestions on what you did to improve these designs?

The problem with the stock rotator cleat is that its plastic and the line has a tendency to slip in the cleat. Swap it out with an aluminum cleat and you should be good to go. I've seen some folks put a Spinlock cleat there, but it's probably overkill. A basic clam cleat is all that's needed.

For the furler line, many folks will put either a lance cleat or a small cam cleat on the front crossbar in place of the V-cleat. On my boat, we don't use any cleat at all, we just tie the furler line to the hiking strap when we want to furl the jib. It ain't pretty, but it works fine and it never slips.

Beefing up the glass and installing the upgrade brackets is on my off season list as well.

Hey Sailinagain -

I'm "in the same boat" haha, get it ? - i recently bought an '86 H18 and will be doing some upgrades this winter as well. Going to replace the access hatches with screw type, re-glue the lower daggerboard seams, replace the mast rotator bushing, upgrade the boom blocks, install righting system......
Need to upgrade the trailer also. And maybe build cat trax in my spare time.

I will post some pics soon - still need to get the boat back home !

Are you planning on doing anything else ?

I have a lance cleat mounted on the underside of the crossbar it's nice because it's out of the way, but I can never remember which way to pull the line to uncleate. The furling line then just comes up through the tramp and right into the pocket. Good luck.

Replace neoprene traction on decks
Refinish and repair daggers
epoxy dagger hulls on bottom
Sand n Paint trailer
Replace outhaul Shock cord in boom
Upgrade downhaul
Build up glass and install upgrade brackets on front xbar
New righting system
New - easier to break down - dagger bungies/hooks
Make a cover out of my old pool cover
Replace batten protectors
replace tell tales
Install trentec super goose for boom
Replace mast rotator bushing


get a second job to pay for all this stuff!!

Hey question - I am looking at a long handle rivet gun that installs up to a 3/16" SS rivet. Is 3/16" as large as I would need to go??

Why are you going with the screw in hatches vs the pop out?

Screw in hatches vs. pop-out... When the original owner was showing me the boat, he popped them in and out to show me the inside of the hulls and was SLAMMING the heck out of them. I watched in horror as the deck flexed and also noticed cracks around the hatches.

While putting together a wish-list on Murrays I noticed replacement hatches and asked someone and they responded that they should be replaced (pop-outs) due to local delamination caused by force required to remove/replace stock access hatches, and apparently they leak. Sounds like an easy upgrade to me.

Ok, that sounds reasonable. I may need to add that project too. Whew. Looking like a lotta work.
