Post subject:  More H18 questions?

I redrilled & tapped the transom for the newer rudder system what should I use to seal the gudgeon screws to prevent water from leaking into the hulls and backing out over time?

Is there any kind os spacer used to keep the bolts that hold the rudder to the castings from wearing into the blade?

Is there and easy way to remove the old factory installed cams?
I tried drilling them out but my bits were to dull I will be buying a new bit set now.

I seal them with silikon or 3m 5200

The bolts should have shoulders on them that are smooth the width of the rudder, threads hitting the rudder = wrong bolts

Drill the head off and tap out, use sister screws on the install. Don't forget the anti-sieze.

Go look at the thread H18 Tramp ... Floyd was asking questions about tramps and gudgeons also .... I posted a reply there. Last two "posts" you will find of use to you ....

And you will need to fill and re-drill your rudder blades holes ... only the upper casting ones if I remember correctly. They will not align properly w/ the "new" rudder system ... if you do use them you will have terrible "heavy" helm issues .... in other words steering will be a b-tch .....

Use WEST Epoxy to fill the holes .....

The EPO rudders came with the newer system and 10-4 on the West systems. I was also going to recoat the rudders with the West Systems epoxy & graphite. I was concerned about wear because I had several issue with my Nacra rudders so I want everything right with no slop I bought all new fittings, cams, springs, pistons, pins, bushings to do it right. Scored a Hobie mesh tramp too so its top notch from a-z!

Somewhere recently I posted about replacing the rudder cams in the "new/upgrade" H18 rudder system .... but I can not remember where, so I'll quickly repeat myself but you may wish to find those posts because I believe I went into greater detail ...

You can either drill the factory rivets out ... or using a hacksaw cut DOWN on either side of the plastic cam ... remove the cam and then using a punch/drift drive out the pieces of the rivet .... this method takes longer but is more foolproof ... and if you don't have electric availible (like on a beach) it works .... I've seen more then one person ruin a casting when the drill bit "walks" ....

Also fill the hollow side of the replacement cam w/ Marine-Tex ... scuff up the inside first to promote bonding .... it will make the cam last longer as usually that center post deflects out of column and then it doesn't work properly and needs to be replaced ... I do 4-6 at a time and have the extras/spares ready in my spare parts kit.

I also carry a putty knife on the boat ... Why??? When the rudder cam doesn't rotate you place the putty knife vertically between the cam and casting ... press down on the plunger underneath ... and you can rotate the cam by hand ... and you can do this out on the water between races ... easy peazy ...
