Should I buy 4 or 6 bushings for use on old H18 rudder castings? Also it seems as if there are no nyliners on the old castings. If I have to open the holes for the bushings is it gonna be possible with a hand drill? Im afraid the drill will follow the wallowed hole and they may not all line up. |

I also have the old-style castings and mine only have four bushings installed (two on each side). My bushings are inserted into the top of the casting holes at the locations in the image below ie., no bushing on the far bottom (my boat came this way when I bought it - not sure if I'm supposed to have the third bushing but two seems to fine). Also, for what it's worth my old-style casting bushings were inserted into the holes from from the top whereas the instruction manual shows them being inserted from the bottom with the new castings. When I replaced my bushings they punched out easily with a screw driver. I don't know why you would have to open up the holes to install new ones - just lube 'em up a bit and tap them in. ![]() |

If you need to drill out the castings, don't worry about wallowing out the holes or if they are perfectly aligned (get them as close as you can, though). You can put the bushings in with a dab of thickened epoxy to fill the gaps. Smear Vaseline on the rudder pin (so the epoxy won't stick to it) and reassemble the casting to the boat. After the epoxy goes off, remove the pin, clean it off and reassemble. Done. Perfectly aligned bushings. |

Brian - My castings do not have any bushings, the hole in the rudder casting is slightly larger then the rudder pins. I believe my boat is an 80', the OEM bushings must have came after that year. I like the idea of using epoxy to align the pins... hopefully I can get it all together before it goes off, lol. |
