Bought a 5:1 downhaul kit from murrays and can't get the thing on. It says to remove the pulley at the bottom of the mast and insert the 3 metal clips in the track. The first one went in no problem, I can't get the other 2 in. I've backed the bolts out on the clips as far as they will go and still hold but no luck. Anyone used this particular kit? It's going on an 82 18.

You may be running into problems because you're trying to install the cleat as an assembly. It may be necessary to remove the square nuts from the brackets, install the screw into the nut (to act as a handle) and slide the nuts into the mast track individually. Then remove the screws, put the bracket in position and re-insall the screws. A bit of a pain, but doable. You can use a small screwdriver or tweezers to help hold the square nut in position while you re-install the screws. I would also definitely use Loctite to ensure everything stays put.

Are you installing the downhaul kit with the mast up or down? I have that downhaul kit and had no problems installing it with the mast down.

I was trying it with the mast up. Taking it down today and will try with it down and the above method too.

Got it on! took both bits of advice...mast down, luff track facing down, slid the first one in and then did the next ones by sliding the square metal "bolt" in and then threading the screw into it.

Thanks!

All right! I finally got a win over srm on advice, and I didn't resort to a wise crack to do it! I think I'm growing. Pardon me while I wallow in a rare victory.

You could have done it without his. I did.
