Post subject:  Spinnaker pole question

Hi guys I'm trying to piece together a spinnaker kit for my 18. I've been working with Jeremy at Surf City, wanting his kit. But he tells me he can't supply the spin pole as hobie isn't carrying the part that joins the two halves anymore. So i'm finding the hardware, and getting the sail from Jeremy

So my question is how long is the pole meant to be? Jeremys kits used a Tiger pole.
I ask becasue, my local dealer in Santa Rosa CA has a used pole thats 11'6" and 1.5" dia, and Jeremy is out of contact until Monday the 2nd so I can't get an answer from him.
I would like to go pick it up if its the correct size.

Thanks

Bruce

I use a "Carbon Fiber" 14' Windsurfer Mast for my P19MX ..... if you need to shorten the spinpole save the cut-off piece ... you can use it w/ a piece of a broken "Hot Stick" to make a "dolphin striker" for the spin-pole if you wish ....

I like the "tapered" look ... vs the "piece of pipe" look ....

Hello friends,
My kit was based off of a few specific parts that I can no longer easily procure.
If you find a stock length Tiger pole, cut the bridles to 68". Measure from the side of the pole to the center of the shackle pin on the other end.

If it were mine, I'd use some type of spliced Dyneema. I didn't do this in the kit because I wanted it to be foolproof.

I think that there may be some 2pc poles arriving from EU. Jacques?

Don't know what spinaker you are going to use... but just FYI, I always thought the stock SX 18 spin pole was too short for the stock SX 18 spinaker. I made an extension for it about 16" long... but I do not recall the overall length.

I am using a 12' carbon tapered windsurfer mast. I got my spin from Chip at Whirlwind.

I purchased 2 sections of 7' x 1½" anondized alum tube from Forespar to fabricate a spin pole. The total pole length will be 12' long. I considered a carbon tube such as a sailboard mast, but decided that it would be too fragile to take long term abuse. a carbon tube needs careful use as cuts in it can substantially weaken it.

In the process of building the rig now, sorry no pix.

Stock Tiger length. Who has that data?

I agree with 555. My spinnakers are flatter and have a more modern shape.

Yes who has that data? I would have thought a Hobie dealer might know that off the top of his head

Its a 12' pole. You might source one from Nacra or Capricorn. You got to remember that Hobie USA doesn't have a boat that runs a spin, all parts come from Hobie Europe. You can also find the extrusion online but shipping is costly. The fittings for each end are easy to fabricate. You definately want the attachment for the crossbar that Jeremy shows, the Tiger style will fail on the H18 beam.

The 11'6" pole the original poster asked about will definately work with one of Jeremys spin setups.

I have a 12' 6" aluminum pole that includes the end pole snuffer. I'm not sure I would go much shorter. The balance seems right. I also have a all aluminum mast. I use the spinnaker just to play around or "run up the coast".
