Use a metal v jam cleat like on the furler line.

The older stock downhaul cleats on the 18 mast just plain sucked. This includes the original metal v-jam cleat (same as the cleat used for the furler line) and the later plastic "barrel" cleat.

The best low cost fix it to get an aluminum Clamcleat, CL-211 MK1 (don't use the nylon version, they wear out and slip). Rivet it to the mast using two 3/16" stainless rivets. The cleat and rivets will cost you less than $20 and these cleats hold well and last a long time. The mounting holes will not line up with the original cleat holes, so just mount the cleat slightly below the gooseneck fitting and right along the edge of the sail track. This way the rivets go into the mast track portion of the mast extrusion and not into the sealed mast section, so there is no leak path into the mast.

I recently mounted one of these cleats on my beach boat to replace the stock plastic cleat, and it works nicely.

Harken exit blocks are a very nice upgrade and make adjusting the downhaul even easier, but they're pricey at around $100 each.

Thanks I will call my dealer today do you think I should replace the line since I am replacing the cleat? The old barrel called for 3/16 line would that clamcleat take the same size any special line for the downhaul polybraid, dynema?

Website for CL-211 MK1 says 1/32"~1/4" line for this cleat. Mauripro has them for $15 ish. Its listed as a Laser part so KO may have it.
