I finally got around to installing the MAgnum wings I picked up last summer. I am however running into some problems. I went to put the bars into the cross beams and found that they do not fit (either the fore or aft cross bar) in the "entry" slot for the tramp. I then noticed that the screw is too large to fit into the slot where the tramp attaches to the cross beams. The mounting kits are new from Hobie (I was too lazy to make my own). I know the front cross beam was replaced in the 90's and the rear is original to the boat (1982). Is the slot for the tramp on the cross beams larger on the new beams? Or, do I need to modify my current crossbeams to accept the wing mounting kits. If I need to clarify my issue please let me know. One concern I do have is if I enlarge the opening where you feed in the rear tramp lacing strip where will the wing mount bar fit on the starbord side of the rear crossbar? |

You have to slide the rears in from the starboard side. Use a mallet to smack the forwards into the center slot. You have to grind openings for the screws. Should all be in the instructions for an SX wing kit. Same stuff. http://static.hobiecat.com/2010_archive/support/pdfs/SX_Wings.pdf |

Thanks for the link. It was what I needed. My wing mounting kits did not come with the anchor plate. Is this something I need for the Magnum wings or can I do without? |

Nick: My 1990 Magnum did not come with Anchor plates either, but after watching two buddies rip their wings out and having mine rewelded because of flexing, I just added them and I feel the wings are a lot more solid now. I ordered the anchor plates through my local distributor. While you're at it, order at least one extra set of mounting screws, etc. to have on hand. Wyatt |

Guys, What are the "anchor plates" you guys are referring to? Are you talking about the anchor plates that attach to the side of the hull where the cross beams and shrouds attach or something else? Thanks, Tom Hundley H18M |

There are anchor plates that install on the cross beams where the wings attach. Click the link that Matt provided for the SX wing installation above and you will see in there what we are talking about. Magnum wings do not have any extra hull attachments. |

Thanks Nick, My 88 Magnum does not have these struts so I guess I'll be adding them. I'm wondering if any Magnum owners out there have installed the wing struts on their boats such as the ones on page 5 and 6 of Matts link above? My wings seem to be very sound as far as fore and aft movement go but this strut looks like it would definately add some strength to the whole assembly. Tom H18M |

Tom, It's not the struts we are talking about, but the anchor plates at the point where the big tube connects to the cross beams. I don't think the Magnum wings need the extra struts like the SX wings do. The Magnums are more sturdy on thier own... IMHO. If you are having no problems with fore and aft movement, I wouldn't worry about adding any other supports. |

After reading the instructions, I would think you will need at least one anchor plate on the starboard side of the aft cross beam (where the opening to feed the lacing strip is) to keep the anchor bar in place. I need to open this up so the anchor bar will fit in the slot. If I do this I will need something to keep it from falling out. |

Anchor plates were not part of the Magnum set, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't be a good idea. I don't think they need it though. The right rear had a "butterfly" piece of stainless over the stud to keep it centered over the tramp opening. You could use the anchor plate there. |

Matt and Nick: My 1990 boat does have SX wings, so I kept the butterfly plate on the aft starboard crossbar so I could remove the tramp. I added three other anchor plates and the two struts that go from the rear of the wings to the aft decks of the Hobie. I bought this boat used about eight years ago. I'm sure the person that owned it bought the wings afterward and just screwed them on. I sailed the boat for two years before I noticed that I must have put too much strain on the boat (I'm 170 lbs and I've always had less than 350 lbs on the boat) and cracked the wings so I had to have them strengthened and rewelded. I added the struts immediately ( I don't think you can buy them anymore; my buddy has been trying) and just added the anchor plates this year because two other boats had wing failure; one an SX wing and one a magnum wing. For the little cost in the anchor plates and rivets, I think it can do nothing but help. Wyatt |

I had ordered wing struts & components from my dealer over a year ago. I still haven't seen them so I guess their not available. I plan to order some dinghy shroud anchors RL 216 from APS and get some alum rod to make my own struts. |
