We trailered our 18 to the SC coast for a great week of beach sailing. It is a 12 hr drive one way. When I was rigging the jib and setting the length of my furler line the lower forestay was not spinning easily. We pulled the furler back and forth to try and get the swivel to release and spin. It was HOT, we were anxious to sail, and we did NOT want to drop the mast. So we pulled a little harder. Bad idea. The lower forestay strands - where no plastic was covering it - turned into a lovely Spirograph type of flower design! Had to run 45 mins up to Myrtle, get a new forestay, and still had to lower the &%$ mast and the stay was $75 hog notes. Lesson - check the spining abililty of the swivel before raising the mast. The long ride must have allowed some debris in the swivel. Worked great after clearing out. |
