Post subject: | H18 with Magnum Wings ~ Trapeze Shock Cord Length? |
I am currently resurrecting my 1977 H18 with magnums and need to replace the VERY stretched trapeze shock cords. A search on the net indicates a 7ft shock cord, with single loop, no wings. Any idea what the correct length for a shock cord with wings? I am guessing an additional 12 to 18 inches..does anyone know for sure? Thanks for scratching your head on this info request. Paul |

We just used the stock length, it worked OK. You can always start a little long and cut it down to what you feel works best. |

If you do a little research here on the forum you will find some posts about how to rig a continious bungie system .... that works VERY well w/ Magnum/SX Wings. So before you purchase any bungie cord please research my old posts. (Everyone who has actually installed the system I propose and have installed on my H18Magnum like it alot ... and it is rigged "inside" the wings ... it will work w/ or w/o wings. There are some "nay sayers" ... but has far as I know, they haven't ACTUALLY rigged/installed the system to try it out ..... they have their minds made up for their own reasons .....) |

Mine are installed inside the wings. Tried them outside the wings for a while but hated it. Tom H18M |

On the 17 (same issue), almost everyone runs their traps inside the wings. |

+ another on the bungie on the inside of the wings... on the outside all it does is wear the wing tramps and get in the way when not being used... |

Having read all the advice presented I have decided that the best plan of attack, as always, must include application of the KISS (keep it simple stupid!!!) rule...that said I have decided to go stock length (7ft) and configuration and run them inside the wings. Many thanks for the replies. Paul |

I have an SX with the trap rigged outside the wings. I think I'm going to change it up to the inside too. I do have a question about rigging the trap system if I want to remove the wings: I have the trap wire extension at the mast tang due to the longer SX mast. If I remove the wings, will my trap wires now be too long to use? Do I need to remove the extension every time I remove the wings, or, should I just remove the extension altogether and use the adjustment line to adjust the length? |

I would run them inside and leave the extension, make adjustments with the rope. |

Well, If I left the extension, and removed the wings, wouldn't it be too low? I can always make dogbone lower with the rope, but of course, can't make it higher. Does anyone sail both with and without wings, or is that just too much of a hassle. |

I do, I though the extension was for the SX mast. I am un-aware of an extension for the wings. I install wings for laze days, and remove them for when I want to pretend I am hard-core. I trap on and off the wings, IMHO the trap wires need to adjustment. |

I use standard trap wires on the SX mast. I currently have them outside of the wings but prefer them inside. I found the handle height of the standard wire to be comfortable and I adjust down for the dogbones. I have the traps outside so I can fold the wings up when the boat is on the beach, keeps people off them. The trap bungees help hold the wings up. |
