I tried sailing my Hobie 18 magnum in Hurricane Irene last weekend , after a very fast 1st tack, wind came up over 50 and I couldn't keep the boat right side up. Coast Guard picked us up but the boat sayed adrift for a day before I found her 6 miles offshore. Amazing how well the cat stayed together , the only major damage was loosing the dagger boards and the port Magnum wing broke off. The batten pockets tore and I lost half my main battens but the sail is fixable. I am now looking for a port side Magnum wing and a pair of daggerboards. Anyone able to help a misguided Hobie sailer???? Thanks Butch |

I have an extra set of dagger boards from an 81 H18. I have been fixing them up and they only need 1 final coat of gel coat, I was going to do it this week. I was hoping on trading them for a spinnaker or at least the boards and some cash for the spinnaker. |

Can I ask a question ... WHAT THE F--- WERE YOU DOING OUT IN CONDITIONS LIKE "HURRICANE IRENE"???? It was your decision to risk your crew's and your life .... but you put at risk foolishly the lives of the BRAVE "Coastie's" that came out in those conditions ... and rescued your a--es!!!! You had no right to do that .... Please think about that ..... |

I have to agree with Harry! You could have furled the jib and run dead downwind back to the nearest shore. Having the Coast Guard come rescue you makes it look bad for all catsailors. I'm a speed junkie also but know my limits and the limits of my boat. You obviously didn't have any business going out in those conditions!! |

That should cure any newbies from posting or joining the forum. I do enjoy leaning on the wings and beach cruising. Getting older and dont get it up as much. (hull). Dont think I would take on Irene type weather. |

Please don't get me wrong ... I'm glad the (Mr?) Applewood was rescued ... and he was fortunate enough to recover his H18Mag the next day. Also note that the sport that is our passion is known as a "Extreme" sport .... But ... you have to know how to evaluate the risks envolved .... and just can not assume that "someone" will be there to save your a--, if "things" go wrong. Large bodies of water, even small bodies of water under the right conditions can be VERY dangerous ... even a DEADLY enviorment. The United States Coast Guard train and practice to be able to perform rescues in the worst conditions possible .... and they are almost always successful ... to the point that they make it look routinue !!!! But that record is not to be taken lightly ... for there is always the risk/possibility of a tragic outcome for any/all those envolved .... Quote: a Macedonian Soldier ...." a great Alexander, there is one thing above all else a successful man must know ... that is when to quit ..." .... sometimes that means knowing when ... (w/ a tip of your hat) ... to just walk away ..... |
