Post subject: | Downhaul Recommendations |
My recently purchased 1989 Hobie Magnum didn't come with anything other than the stock downhaul. I'm looking for recommendations for "something better" without breaking the bank. Thanks! Mark |

I love my 5 - 1....easy and much faster to adjust. Some folks go 8 - 1, guess it depends if you are running a dacron or Pentex sail. Your Dealer can help, or you can build your own. email me off line, I'll send you jpg's....lunnjohn at magma dot ca |

Depends for what you're looking to do. For my racing boat, I run a 6:1 with dual exit blocks (one cleat on each side of the mast). I wouldn't have it any other way for racing. This system allows for easy and constant adjustment from any position on the boat during a race. For my beach boat, I run a pretty simple 4:1 system with harken blocks and a basic clam cleat riveted to the mast (probably around $70 to $80 total cost). Works fine for going out and blasting around. At the very least, I'd recommend minimum 4:1 purchase and using quality blocks to reduce friction. sm |
