My son has recently purchased an older Hobie 18, possibly a 1983? It still has the original 'Carumba' colored sails. We've sailed the 16 a few times for fun but this is a different beast entirely! The whole jib halyard system had us perplexed for while. The mast on this boat is all aluminum. I heard that Hobie had a replacement program for the comp tip. Do we have to purchase the comp tip or is Hobie still handing out those giant Pixie Styxs? Should I even bother? We've only had it out once on a very light and chilly Pacific Northwest day with between 0-3 knots of wind. We fumbled around for a while but did manage to actually sail in a direction of our choosing. Being newbies, the light air was probably a good thing. We didn't hit anything and othing broke which was good. (but I did manage to lose the little gooseneck U shaped thingy that goes bewteen the boom and the mast). You have to purchase the comptip. Don't bother with it, just watch out for power lines. Goose neck "U" is interchangeable between 16 & 18. They make a aluminum billet replacement for about $20. Hobie Dealer for parts. |

Welcome to the H18 club. Zubie if you post in your profile where you live you will get a better responce on help issues. Hobie is not giving away comptips anymore. That program ended about 20 years ago. The comptip is a safety device which helps prevent electrocution from contact with overhead powerlines. It has very minimal effect on boat performance. Whether or not you choose to install one is up to you, however if you want to race in Hobie sanctioned regattas, you will eventually need to get one. The jib halyard system on the 18 is really pretty simple, unfortunately it's not intuitive since there is a jib halyard line and a separate jib tensioner line. I'd suggest taking a look at the Hobie 18 assembly manual and then if you have any specific questions, post them. You can get spare parts from any Hobie dealer or Murrays. sm |

Get plenty of spare ring-dings, clevis pins, shackles and drain plugs. You will lose a couple of them and there is nothing worse than a $5 part ruining your day on the water. The H18 jib, wax the zipper and it will help it work better. If you do not have sister clips on the halyard, get some. I like it much better than the H16 system. |

My son Eric is actually the owner. I am only an innocent bystander who occasionally is allowed to fix things and go for rides where I act mostly as moveable ballast. Cheers, Greg |

Hello Zubie, What year is your boat? Do you know when the standing rigging was last replaced? If not check the wires for any rust or fraying. consider replacing Next if you do not know when the side shourd pins were last replaced then add them to your Christmas list. These are a week link on an 18 (expensive but they hold your mast up). After the standing rigging then purchase the fun items like new decals, sheets, tramp, sails, down haul, trap wires, H20 rudder connector kit, hotstick and all the other fun go fast items.
