Just replaced my diamond wires, and this is what I saw at my mast rotation pin. Am I missing a plate that goes over this or is this just regular wear and I need to look into a plate and some plastic bushings? I don't like how sloppy the sleeve is.

There is supposed to be a diamond shaped plate that is riveted to each side of the mast to reinforce the rotator/diamond wire bolt. sm |

No the mast rotator and its connection to the mast is being spoken about. There is no triangular connection plate. From what I can see there is a lot of salt corrosion taking place. I was at Hobie shop this morning discussing water in the mast which has been been leaking through from the mast rotator bolt. In short his comment that after +20 years, the area of plug seal above the rotator is probably no longer good and needs to be redone / resealed. According to him every H18 needs to be redone / resealed every so often for this mast rotator area. I was going to connect a vacuum pump to get this small amount of water out (+- 1 litre from when I last turtled). Logically not a good idea as it would have totally damaged the plug seals. I have attached a photo of my old mast rotator as it stands today. From this weekend onwards my boat starts to get a "make-over" New 8:1 downhaul New Carbon fibre Technora fusion M membrane square top sails In a few months I will do the spinny. I just need to replenish my pocket

Thanks for the time posting. My problem is that the hole is getting wobbled out. . . so nothing is snug. Coming from a family of machinists. . . .I'm having a hard time with that. I think the plate may be a fix for this issue? ? ? Either way I will have to do something before it gets much worse. Not that I couldn't go out sailing or anything . . . .. |

Srm is correct there should be a diamond shaped plate there. It was added in the middle 80's so you won't see it on the older boats. I'd contact a Hobie dealer about getting a set.

If you have access to some basic metal working tools, you could easily fab these plates yourself for a fraction of the retail price. It's a very simple part. You will also want to put electrical tape between the plate and the mast to act as an insulator. Otherwise you will get a lot of corrosion between the SS plate and the aluminum mast. sm |

I'm not sure if my memory serves me correctly .... but wasn't there also a "sleeve" that was fitted inside the mast at the same time as the reinforcement plates were added to the outside of the mast. I think the sleeve had to be installed through the mast bottom by removing the mast base. It's purpose is to prevent the mast/extrusion walls from flexing/collapsing inward that could lead to a mast failure. I would check w/ Matt Miller ...... |

The compression sleeve can pass directly through the holes in the plates/mast - no need to remove the mast base. The main issue is that it's an aluminum part and the bolt is stainless, so if your boat has seen any salt water over the years, the sleeve will likely be frozen to the bolt. You'll have to cut the end of the bolt off to remove the diamond wire/rotator bolt and then replace the bolt and sleeve. (Actually, the sleeve is not really necessary, just don't over-tighten the bolt.) sm |
