Post subject:  Hobie 18SX Wings
Has anyone attempted to ship Hobie 18SX wings? I would need to have them shipped from Texas to Arizona. Who did you use? How did you package them up? Any idea on weight and cost?

SX wings can be disassembled. Magnum wings cannot. The wings weigh 150lbs or so. Disassembled should ship UPS. If the tramps are no good have them removed prior to shipping to cut down on weight.

I have both Magnum and SX wings. Still not mounted. Don't ask.

Magnums weigh about 12 to 14 lbs each, the SX's around 24 lbs each.

The issue is not weight, but size, or rather length. UPS will not ship anything as long (11 feet long!) as SX wings. So the answer is to drill out the rivets that hold the legs on, make a crate, (email me for pictures if you want,) and ship them flat. Shipping cost me about $200 from California to Ottawa, Eastern Ontario, Canada. Borrowed an air rivetting gun to re-assemble.

Magnums are a problem as they are welded, and cannot be shipped flat. A crate can also be made, just becomes a bulkier package.

Finally, if you are buying SX wings, make sure you get the rear struts, the ones that prevent the wings from folding forward. If they are not supplied, make your own, not difficult.

Now, if only I could figure out how to mount either the M's or the SX18's, I could take family and friends sailing. Hmmmm. Anyone out there have any tricks? Seems my anchor studs (the ones in the cross bar) are out of square.

John, I don't follow you. Anchor bolts out of square? I take my wings off and put them back on frequently. The supports don't always stay in place but easy to adjust. Mine are Magnum wings. Tell me more about your problem and maybe I can help.

Great day in Ottawa this morning, sunny, with a light breeze and building. Dropped our 12 year at NSC Sailing Camp (Bronze Level 4/5, sailing 420's). Driving to the office, looked across the bay to Brittania SC, and watched while their camp was rigging. Maybe I'll play hookey this afternoon and take out the H18. Tempting.

John I can't find the brackets used to attach the struts to the boat. Hobie doesn't have them either. Do you have pics or suggestions on how to make these brackets and/or struts?

Han, I have brackets & struts supplied by Hobie but never installed on my boat. (Don't ask, magnum wings, was told I don't need them). I can get you pictures & measurements in about a week if your interested.

The struts just stop the fore & aft wiggle of the wings.
