Post subject:  hobie 16 or 18

Hi, I have never sailed before but want to learn.
I am thinking of getting a late 70's or early 80's Hobie Cat.
There are two in my area right now, a 16 and an 18 foot.

I was wondering what the difference in tramp sizes were along with any other major differences that may influence my decision.
Also, is this boat OK for a beginner?

Thank You for any advise you can give me.

Where will you be sailing? The 16 is more simplistic. The 18 is a bigger boat with larger sail plan and really needs to be sailed with 2 people on board. The 16 can easily be sailed solo. I would say start with a 16, if you have the need for more speed or people capacity upgrade to an 18. Since the 16 is still in production parts will be available for a long time to come.
