Guys, In your experiences is there a best way to prevent the mainsheet from washing overboard when things get rough.? I know that constant awareness of the sheet's location is great but when it gets crazy out there my attention is elsewhere...Suggestions appreciated.....DJ |

When it's "crazy out there", the mainsheet doesn't leave my hand. I don't cleat it down in heavy winds. |

a combination of the mainsheet overboard preventer (hobie catalog or ebay) and crew... I made my own overboard preventer for $2.50 with a sheet of window screen and some cord. |

Try Robbline, gets washed overboard less. Try the 'preventer' mentioned above.... mine is made from shadecloth. |

I have trouble getting pics posted here so I'm not going to try for this...but maybe this description will suffice. I have the mainsheet preventer strips that the others mentioned made out of matching strips of an old vinyl trampoline with a grommet set in each end, but they do nothing when it gets crazy and the water is coming over the front crossbar and "washing" the lower section of the tramp, sending the mainsheet out over the back. I thought a long time about how to create a barrier along the back of my tramp that wouldn't interfere with function, and I finally settled on using two pieces of larger swimming pool noodles, the ones with the hole through the middle attached across the rear lacing of my tramp. You have to leave a space in the middle for your traveler cleat to function well, and the two sections stay down in place better than one long section would anyway. I just run a bungee cord through the hole in each piece and clip it down to the rear tramp lacing as it exits the ends...this creates a low rear wall across the back of my tramp that is high enough to catch the mainsheet and low and soft enough not to interfere with any of the other functions you have to be taking care of in those crazy conditions. I still lose my mainsheet off the low side of the tramp sometimes when I am dorking around high hull flying, but the noodle sections take care of wash off issue when you are racing and the boat is only tilted enough to clear the wave tops. I thought it was good because they could go on and come off in a "snap", but I have taken to just leaving them on all the time because I don't even think about them being there anymore, that's how non interfering they are. Let me know if this helped you, it's too cheap not to try out, and too simple to patent and sell. lol. |
