I just converted my 1982 18' to the new style rudder hardware this spring. On my old style I could 'lock' the rudders up, however on the new style I have been using bungy cords to keep them up. otherwise they dig in the sand when trying to push the boat back in the water. What is the trick? Am I that much of an idiot not to be able to figure this out? Please help. Apologies if there is a posted answer on this already, but I di not find it. tks al |

The rudder castings do lock "up". Chances are that the upper rudder hole is drilled incorrectly. The upper castings nest into the lowers in the up position. |

Well that is interesting, because the rudders are also new and I followed the 'online' template for drilling. do you have a nice close-up picture of what it looks like when it is 'locked-up'? My upper casting(s) don't appear to be close to the lower castings when held horizontal. I must have checked the template 100 times before I drilled them. I wonder if I got a mismatch set of castings from the dealer? |

Lift on the tip off the rudder while pushing on the arm. Arm should make contact with the lower casting and will engage against the back edge of lower casting. If your bolts are tight the arm won't fall down to make contact. Also contact point on new style engages with rudder lower than old style, straight out from the sterns. If they lock down then the drill is probably right. |

The arm does make contact, however there is 'nothing' to 'latch' on. I suspect something else is amuck. Does anyone have a nice close-up picture that you can send to me that shows how they 'latch' up? tks |
