I just wanted to share this with the forum, This is the 3rd time out with the H18 since I got it last fall, I did all the up-dates recommended on the forum (many thanks to all) as well as all new rigging & hardware. I painted all the aluminum to up-date the look & re-finished the EPO rudders. The daggerboards needed a lot of attention and they turned out good. I sail my H16 at our cottage lake (usually singlehanded) but the H18 is great for the more open waters of the Ottawa River. I still need more time on the water to learn all the extra adjustments available on the H18, but so far, it sails great. This was the first time out with the gopro mounted about 6ft aft of the rear crossbar, turned out pretty good. If you look real close, you can just make out the drain plug tethers in the spray, yes...I left them out, I remembered when we were about 1KM off shore, Good thing the wind was good & we kept a good speed. Dave I am not an expert on boat setup, but the rudders look really odd to me. Tips pointing forward underneath the boat like that. Is that the way they should be? |

They do look like they're raked pretty far forward... However, I know the gopro tends to distort a little bit, so it could be an illusion. I'd just check that the rudders are drilled for the new/H21 style rudder castings, not the older pre-1987 style (original) castings. Otherwise, I like that gopro mounting method. I've also had it on a pole off the end of the boom, and I've seen it suspended under the furler... I'm not a fan of the masthead or hull mounted shots. |

The rudders do look strange in the video, its the distortion of the gopro lense that makes it look like that, the rudders are set up properly & raked to give a slight weather helm. I spent some time on them to get it right, I have zero slop in the steering. Dave |

I missed that as well, I'm usually at our summer cottage on the weekends (sailing my H16, of course) so I only get to sail the H18 after work during the week. I got the boat from a local fellow named Gregg, I don't think he was a member of any club, but he did say he put in at Shirley's bay a few times. There was a name in marker on the bottom of the tramp, I think it was Macintosh (?). I did see a photo of this boat on the KSC website photos section this winter, the photo was dated 2008. Its a decent boat, the hulls have been painted, but looking inside, I don't see any fiberglass repairs. It has a comptip, swivel bob, original EPOs, late style rudder castings, hotstick & a good tramp (probably original) I'm looking forward to sailing it at least once a week through the summer, depending on work & weather, we'll see Dave |
