Post subject:  To buy or not to buy Magnum 18

Reading the posts I see this boat does not have the D reinforcing brackets under the front cross bar. This probably added to the lip cracks and major failure at this point. I suppose the only way to fix this boat is to cut holes in the hulls and go at the cracks with plenty of access. The rest of the hulls seem very solid but I'm a bit scared to by it and start cutting into the hulls. I suppose to replace the removed say 10" dia piece of hull I would glass the inside and outside and feather the repair outside.
This big question I have is can I really effectively repair the hull lips with plenty of carbon and glass spreading the repair to not create a stress line. How much should I cut my offer to buy the boat by considering this repair on both hulls or should I just pass on the only 18 I have found on the island in possible repairable condition. Oddly the lip by the shrouds looks fine. I wonder if this failure is related to the wings. If you have any advice please offer it. Mahalo, Steve

i believe those brackets are specifically for bracing for the load the wings put on the hull. from what i have read.

Steve,
My boat had 7'' cracks under the lip that I could slide my pocket knife about 3 inches into from the outside, I carefully cleaned the gelcoat off the inside of the lip and cleaned up the inside(there are some posts about grinding out the glue on the redline boats) and applied polyester resin and fiberglass to the inside with multiple layers inside, and a couple of layers outside. It can be done through the access hatch with care, and in my case the use of a cell phone video and sticking it up in there. I applied glass 5'' past the original crack location and have sailed the hell out of it with moderate success. I am considering applying more material to deal with cracking around the access hole.

If you have some fiberglass experience, this sort of work is at least a few hundred dollars worth of your time and money, and depending on how bad the crack actually is, may be worth more of a discount off the asking price. Keep in mind, wings in good condition are worth good money, so are nice colored hobie sails. When you say major failure... you just mean a crack? or distortion in the hull.
