| Post subject: | H18 weight vs tornado |
Hi. Ive currently got a 93 h18. I am looking at a marstrom tornado and was wondering if anyone would know the weight difference? Just wanting to know to compare manageability on the beach. Also, would the tornado be able to carry heavier crew weight than the T? |

According to the Tornado class rules, minimum weight for a Tornado is 155kg (341lbs). Minimum H18 weight is 400lbs. Tornado is 10 feet wide (hard to trailer). H18 is 8 feet wide. |

There is more to beach manageability than just weight. As Jim said, the T is 10 feet wide, the H18 is 8 feet wide. So the H18 can be easily trailered, the T needs a specialized tilt trailer or full disassembly. The T, especially with spinnaker, is much more complex from a rigging standpoint than the H18. And the T would definitely require meticulous use of beach wheels whereas the H18 you can drag around on the ground if you want or sail right up onto the beach. The T requires a lot more time and care on the beach. sm |

A 'good; Marstrom T will weigh in around 360 lbs. They are fast, light and powerful. As SRM says, be advised that hulls are paper thin and can never be allowed to touch a beach.... Get foam blocks to 'rest' the boat on when you park on land. Trailering is a challenge. As you may know, for many years, they were the Olympic Class catamaran, and they have the performance to earn that designation. However, they are not as 'forgiving' as the venerable H18. In Club racing, they are surprisingly fast upwind, and a hoot downwind, especially with spin. Took me three years to learn how to keep up with or beat them round the buoys in my SX18 with spin. Buddies of mine at Nepean Sailing Club have access to parts.... if you need. |

Thanks for the replies. I didn't think about the hulls on the beach with the thinner construction. I will have to give that some more thought as the h18 I have gets slammed around all the time on the beach. The width trailering and the tilt trailer dosnt concern me however - I own an earthmoving business and often tow 24 + tonne excavators so the trailer I don't mind HOWEVER I didn't know it would be more complicated to rig. Can someone tell me more about that? |

The Tornado just has more "control systems" and you are going to have to rig these each time. I'm sure it depends on the boat and you could probably de-tune some of these systems, but the T is just a more complex boat. The one guy that I know used to race his at on of our regattas, he would show up to the site the day before and spend HOURS rigging his boat. That may be an extreme case, but it is likely that you will be spending significantly more time rigging the boat. It is the nature of the beast. A Hobie 18 you could leave the rudders on and much of the boat assembled and be fully rigged a 1/2 hour after arriving at the sailing site. sm |
