| Post subject: | Hobie 18 models |
I am looking to purchase a used Hobie catamaran. Now that I have narrowed my search to an 18', I realize that there are several models i.e. Magnum, SX, Formula, etc. Can anyone direct me to where I can get detailed information on the differences between these models? |

The 18 Magnum has "short" wings that don't extend past the crossbars. The SX and Formula have a taller rig and mylar/dacron taffeta (one side mylar; one side dacron) sails. The SX has "longer" wings that extend beyond the crossbars. The mylar sails are prone to delamination if not well taken care of. |

US used boats will be 18se (no wings) 18mag ( older style wings, shorter) and the 18sx ( longer wings, 29'6 mast and mylar/dacron sails). The formula was rarely seen or sold in the US so you aren't likely to find one. There is a window from about '83 to 86' where the 18 had some serious delam issues, those boats where built under Coleman ownership. With the exception of wings or the taller SX mast and mylar/dacron sails they are all the same, the platform is the same. Late '70s and early '80s boats are a little heavier than the newer SX. And as stated earlier the mylar/dacron sails are very subject to delam failure. |

Welcome to the Hobie 18. Look around on this and other websites for used ones. A standard H-18 can easily accept magnum wings or SX wings. The taller 18 mast version is harder to find and sails are more expensive. Find a ride on one with wings and you will find that it is a comfortable boat, and dryer too. They can be retrofited with a spinnaker if you so desire, and yet go back to class legal (with out wings)for OD racing. I love mine. |
