Post subject:  1984 hobie 18 wings

I saved a 84 hobie 18 from going to e junk yard, hulls are great aside from a hole in one hull from a bolt breaking through on the trailer, it's small and about to be patched. Mast and standing rigging are all there but not much of anything else.
Anyway, I found a 79 hobie 18 with wings for a score, figure I can use most all the parts from it.
My question, will the boom and wings from the 79 be comparable with the 84? I already have sails for the 84, but need battens, will the battens from the 79 work with the 84?
Thanks

Yes the parts should be interchangeable on 18s. when adding wings you may want to reinforce the hulls as described in other posts.
Check the condition of the battens closely, you don't want to use old splintered ones. I have shortened battens to get rid of bad ends and then purchased the longest one to complete a set.

+1

This is a must especially on the 1984 boat if it is a red line/glue boat (some of the 84s weren't). The wings will kill the glass joint below the cross arms. Front and back.

I would advise against it period unless you do the reinforcing.

I bought a RedGlue '85 with Magnum Wings and no reinforcing anywhere and there is no cracking at all under the crossbars. So it isn't all the boats that are problems. I have just add 6 reinforcement plates to the boat because I'd like to sail it hard for a long time to come. Wings Rule
