Post subject:  How do you tell the lower rudder castings apart?

I had to replace the starboard lower casting, that was befor learning they are different?
I have no clue if I got a starboard casting or not. The manual says there is a red or green dot, but there's no dots.
Also, how do you tell the rudders apart, do they bow?

Thanks

Forrest

Figured out how to differentiate the upper castings byblookingvatvtje curve on the arms, curving inward is how they are supposed to be, I gather that the lower castings are the same but I haven't figured out the rudders yet

There is no difference between Port & Starboard lower rudder castings or rudder blades. Only the upper castings are "handed".

There is a difference between the "Old Style" and "New Style" rudder system for the H18. Around 1987, the entire rudder system for the H18 was revamped which included changing the upper and lower rudder castings. The old style and new style rudder castings are not interchangeable (i.e., you can not use an old upper casting with a new lower casting or vice versa).

The old style lower castings had an aluminum "latch" that engaged a rolling pin on the upper casting when the rudders were locked down. The new style lower castings have a rotating plastic "cam" that engages an adjustable plate in the upper casting when the rudders are locked down.

Probably the easiest way to tell the two systems apart is by looking at the the upper casting. If you see a recessed slot in the top of the upper casting with the head of a hex bolt showing (5/16" bolt), then you have the new system (this is the rake adjustment for the rudders). If there is no hex bolt in the upper casting, then you have the old style system (no rake adjustment). It can be hard to tell the two systems apart by looking at the lower castings as they look very similar.

That is really odd. Never heard of a tiger blade on a Hobie 18.

Old style castings would have a metal spring loaded cam.

2000 would have the newer castings too.
