Post subject:  Hobie 18 SX Dolphin rod replacement?
Hello, I have a 1990 Hobie 18SX with a dolphin striker rod that has both nuts stripped on the ends. I was wondering how hard it would be to replace the 8' long rod?? Wondering if one could cut the rod, pull out both pieces and then thread the new one thru one casting, thru the dolphin striker and then thru the other casting? I also am aware that Never-seize on the threads is your friend when you reassemble :)

I did this once back on a Hobie 16 and it got messy but I did get to replace it (same reason, nuts stripped).

The only reason I could imagine the nuts stripping is that the rod is seized in the castings. That could be a challenge in itself.

I think the complete disassembly of the forward beam is the best course and removal of the end castings.

I'll have to leave it to someone who has tried without disassembly to comment on that possibility.

I agree with Matt. Even if the striker rod isn't seized, I think you would still want to remove the front crossbar from the boat in order to replace it. If it is seized, then you will definitely need to remove the crossbar.

Before removing the crossbar from the hulls try to see if either side will move. Since the nuts are removed try standing on rod to see if either side will move. If they are frozen I would cut the rod with 6 inched showing and try to drive it out with a hammer (the rod is already junk). If these steps don't work then remove the crossbar and pull the end castings. Used end castings are cheap, you might be money and time ahead to replace the castings also.
