Hello, just bought a Hobie 18 in great condition for a 1979 model boat. Dagger boards might be a bit swollen, got some minor cracks in the gel coat but she floats and sails with no water in the hulls. Love my new/old Hobie ! Question: we can't get main sail off the hook to let it down..turned mast starboard, tugged and pulled, the darn thing won't come off the hook. Had to step it down with sail up to get it to unhook. What are we doing good wrong? |

I wrote a FAQ on that: https://www.hobie.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=371 Basically, you have to pull hard on the halyard to get the sail up off the hook... hold it... then rotate the mast to starboard... then ease off the halyard while still holding the mast rotated. Let it down a foot or so before allowing the mast to rotate back. |

Does the halyard hook at the top of your mast have a small pivoting latch riveted to it? (This is often referred to as "the flopper".) sm |

I had the same issue for many weeks until given some advice re: setup. Now it drops so easily - the sound of the un-clicking is still a relief So try: Loosen batten tension - so its just firm. (My previous experience was my H16 where battens are pretty tight). Silicon spray the mast track. Ensure your using the right size shackle at the stop. I had a shackle that was way too big and prevented me from actually lifting up off the hook. When attaching this shackle to the main, turn it once or twice to give it alittle pre-load so once you raise the halyard and turn the mast the pre-load will help for that unhooking your after. |
