Love it. Still one of the most iconic catamarans out there, even if it is a discontinued boat :?

Agreed. For all of the technological improvements with sails and boats, still a great choice. When boats are measured by horsepower to weight ratios, there may be some that are better. However in the category of cost to horsepower, nothing beats it in my book.

Half hour long promotional video called "Sharing the Wind." It's on youtube:

It looks like about 23:47 is the shot used in the ad, though it's from a slightly different angle (different chase boat?). The scene Chris is referring to is at 24:21. The whole sequence is from 23:00 to 25:00, but just watch the whole video. It's fantastic. Makes me want to grab my boat and go sailing every time!

Also, "daggerboarding" pre-dates modern commercialized wakeboarding by a few years.

That's easy to explain: Sharing The Wind was "coded" (transformed) from whatever start-medium there was into NTSC format. And like with all such media, the quality of the still images is not up to par. Stills were shot by a photographer with a 35mm camera (most likely a Nikonos under these circumstances).

The video-footage and the still-photography might not even cover the same moment. It is possible that the photo captured a beautiful start/take-off that ended in a not so photogenic landing, and the video just showed entire sequences from start to landing.

That video is responsible for my enthusiasm in Hobie 18 sailing and ownership. Saw it in 1979-80 at a boat expo in Erie, Pa and was bitten. I was especially intrigued by jumping on, sheeting in and launching into the surf. I've owned an 1983 H18 for 25 yrs and at almost 60 yrs old still single hand it from a harness sometimes from a wing. Just bought a second one '89 sail #14919 (2 off from RocketmanII I've noticed). Now I have a fleet!
The image does look similar but have the sail numbers been digitally removed and other markings added and if so why?
Still iconic footage! Gets me wanting to sail every time I watch it!!

Definitely photoshopped the sail numbers away

Wow, that's odd. Why take the time & effort to photoshop them out? It's not like it's a VIN.

Also, that's pretty cool about the sail number! What pattern is the sail? I've noticed that my main sail is the "generator" pattern that was sold in 1989, so I assumed that was when it was bought. I have I believe the original (1979) main for the boat too, an all white sail with a 4 digit number on it, but it's got an ugly oil stain on it

Same pattern sail as yours. My jib is the same colors as the main.

Wow, pretty cool! Not sure what happened to the matching jib for mine, but I'm kinda betting that the previous owner only bought the mainsail. Pretty good looking boat you've got there!
