It looked like a perfect plan. We're not going anywhere this summer because the house needs new windows (energy cost have gone through the roof over the last few years). So we'll stay home and I will sail my Hobie a few times per week. Life could be worse.

In fact life has become A LOT WORSE. The rear beam is broken (corroded over the years, I guess) and no such part is in stock at any dealership in Germany, Belguim or France. I ordered a new part, but no delivery date is confirmed by Hobie Cat Europe.

Now I fully understand that HC18 parts are getting rare. The boat is out of production for more than a decade and nobody wants to stock spareparts; it's dead capital. You can find front beams (used ones in pristine condition) everywhere, but nobody has a used rear beam in the back of the toolshed. It seems like they never are in good-enough shape to keep them when some old boat gets slaughtered....

Keep an eye on yours - mine broke on both sides where the beam joins the hulls. Check the picture:

It must have corroded for a long time before finally cracking. If Hobie Europe can't get the piece quickly, my summer's gone!

Ouch!

But at least you caught it before it broke out on the water. That would be a mess.

You have a ton of corrosion going on at the mounting bolts. That should have been the first sign something was up. Unfortunately, these crossbars seem to develop quite a bit of corrosion all around the inboard mounting bolt castings.

The rear crossbar on one of my 18's had a lot of corrosion around the inboard holes and I was able to reinforce the area using a backing plate on the inside of the crossbar. The rear crossbar extrusion on the H18 is actually a modified version of the H14 mast extrusion. I had a chunk of H14 mast in my basement (leftover from a comptip conversion) that I used. I removed the inboard castings and then I cut the donor mast into a strip that was about 6-8" long and able to be slipped inside the crossbar. Since the inside casting moved up about 0.10", the very tip of the casting had to be notched to fit inside the crossbar. I drilled the necessary holes in the backing plate as well as holes to rivet the plate to the crossbar and put everything back together.

Anyway, this might be an option for you if you have any old H14's around that could donate a mast or pylons. A H14 "pylon sleeve" might also be an option. Then you could get the crack welded and reinforce the crossbar with a backing plate and it would get you back on the water until your new crossbar arrives.

Good luck.

I have a spare rear beam in the tool shed. I don't know what's up with everyone else... sounds like the euro guys need to get with the program.

I didn't get through to BNR on Saturday and wanted to try again on Monday. Then I found one here in France. Used, complete with castings and all for 200.- Euro. It's already installed, the tramp is on and I'm back!
