| Post subject: | Where to purchase a carbon fiber mast? |
Any recommendations on a carbon fiber mast for a Hobie 18? Or a better than stock aluminum mast? The original mast on my H18 has many issues and needs to be replaced so I was thinking to upgrade. Any advice appreciated. |

While you may be able to source a carbon fibre tube, it will be a fairly major project to fit it out with diamond wires, tang and other fittings. If you have access to a machine shop and you are experienced.....this may not be as big a deal. At the end of the day, you may be better off (financially) by buying a used Hobie Tiger. No 1 recommendation would be a regular H18 mast - they come up from time to time, usually comp tip. No 2 choice would be an SX18 mast, which means new standing rigging, new sails etc No 3 choice would be a Hobie Tiger mast, and again, this means new mast base, new standing rigging, new sails etc. Look at your $ budget and more important, look at your time budget......I say go for #1. |

John has a good point. A retrofit carbon fiber mast on a H18 means that you'll have to set up custom standing rigging and probably even custom sails, or else you'll have to move the mast tang, mast hook and other components. You'll likely need to have custom length rigging made every time you need to replace your standing rigging, and your sails may or may not work with the new mast, particularly if it's a different length. I think some people have retrofit H18's with tiger masts in the past, and just gone with tiger sails and custom rigging, but that may be more work and money than it's worth to you. |

Like the poster said above a used 2002 - 2005 Tigers are going for $4,000 to $6,000. in my area |
