Post subject:  Aluminum bar at the top of the mast

I have a 1985 Hobie 18. I've sailed in many years up on the Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories. It has an aluminum bar riveted to the top of the mast and I have never understood why. recently I capsized the boat and the bar got torn off. I am wondering whether I should just plug the holes with silicon of whether I should rivet the bar back on. None of the Hobie 18 mast diagrams show this metal bar. Was it used to put an anti-turtling float on the mast?
Hope you guys can help me out! Thanks.

Hard to say for sure without pictures, but that sure sounds like it. Or possibly a mount for a wind vane. In either case, if it is not being used, then I would say yes, just drill out the rivets and remove it. Then plug and seal the holes.

Likely the Moma Bob mount.

If you don't have the float, you can just plug the holes.

Here are the float instructions to see if this is what you have:

Thanks for your replies. Yes it was the mount for the Moma Bob float.
