Post subject:  Replacement Harken Jib Block

I want to replace the two Seaway jib blocks on my H18. The current blocks have a metal slider attached to the base. Has anyone replaced their blocks and how does this plate come off?

Second, any advice on which Harken would work as a replacement?

Thanks.
Tom

If my memory is correct, the slider and block are all one piece on the Seaway jib blocks. I don't think you can easily separate the block from the slider without cutting. The entire assembly can be removed from the jib track by unscrewing the plastic stopper on either end of the track. Then slide the assembly out.

I believe the upgrade Harken blocks should be available through either Hobie or Murrays Marine. It should be a complete assembly including slider. The blocks will look very similar to the Seaway, except that they're Harken. They will still have a becket on top and the cleat. If you can't find it in the catalogue, I would simply call Murrays or your Hobie Dealer, they should know exaclty what the part number is.

Oxen blocks are also an upgrade option for the 18 jib.

At $225 each that's an expensive upgrade. However, Oxen blocks came with my 18 and they make working the jib sheet effortless (cleat and release the jib sheet from any angle with a simple pull on the sheet, no snapping the sheet up or down in the cams), so if you have the money and desire then get them. I'm keeping mine even if the boat goes.
