Hi there, I bought a used Hobie 18 and am rigging the boom for the first time and need help with how the boom should look. I have attached the boom to the gooseneck and rigged the line through the jam cleat properly but the boom is hanging down in the back almost on the trap but not fully down. When we raise the sail and rig the downhaul in front will that raise the back of the boom up where the traveler etc can function properly? Sailed 18s and 16s a long time ago and it's been a while. Don't want to try to figure it out when we take it out for the first time on the water. David

If this bothers you, then you can use the main halyard to hold the boom up before you raise the mainsail. Just pin the ring of the main halyard to the outhaul car, pull the halyard so the boom raises about two feet off the tramp, and tie off the halyard. Its also very important when you do hoist the mainsail, that you understand how the halyard ring/hook system works and how to engage the ring into the hook. If you don’t lock in the halyard hook, then your mainsail will slip down the mast and your boom will end up being very low to the trampoline. sm

The line through the jamb cleat is just to control the mast rotation. The stainless bar attached to the mast just above the gooseneck is the mast rotation bar. It doesn't support the boom. We don't attach the boom until after we have raised the mainsail. We find it a bit easier to get the sail raised when the boom isn't in the way. You need to attach the boom outhaul car to the mainsail clew. If the mainsail is fully raised the boom should be a couple feet above the aft crossbar.
