Hi All, Decided to buy a Hobie 18 38 years after I sold my last Hobie 18...while saving up enough to buy last big boat (Corsair F31 or Farrier F9). Anyway, looking at 2 boats, standard Hobie 18's. One earlier, (late 80's build), one more recent (late 90's build). They are in similar condition with similar gear. The older one is half the price of the newer one (2.5K CDN vs 5K CDN). This would appear to be a no-brainer EXCEPT the newer one has wings. I had wings on my last 18, didn't use them much, but I (and crews) are a LOT older now, so think I would use them or at least use them as a backrest! So the questions are: ~how easy is it to get (used) wings, ~at what cost, ~where can I get them (I live near Toronto, Canada), ~how easy is it to convert the standard beams to take wings, ~and, as I recall, there are two different wings, SX and Magnum, and which should I get for recreational sailing, often with beginners? Sorry if this question has been asked before. thanks All Tom (I'd list the boats I've owned, but there's not enough space here...) |

I am in Toronto and Belleville a few days a week Have been considering a getaway or 18 with wings Don’t know there are 2 types of wings I have seen some cats with a fully netted wing to lean against at various angles. Interested sailing with someone who is familiar with cats. I can launch from my place in Prince Edward county. Avid windsurfer. Had a dart. Catalina 27 and 30 albacore etc Robbie cell 416-319-2833 |

We have the magnum wings and really like them. They do limit how far the boat can heel before a wing digs into the water and slows you down. They are pretty comfortable for a backrest, though probably not as comfortable as a getaway's wings. My wife made some mesh pockets that hang between the wings and the hulls that we use to store paddles, water bottles, etc. It's also a lot more comfortable to bring other people along with the wings. The magnum wings are rated for 450 lbs so you can fit a couple of adults on each wing (though the boat is pretty sluggish with that much weight on it). You can probably find H18 wing set for free to $1000. Check the classifieds, craigslist, beachcats facebook marketplace. Our magnum wings have a bracket that replaces the washer for the outboard crossbeam bolts. There is also a stainless rod insert with a threaded hole that slots into trampoline channel of each of the crossbars. You will have to remove the trampoline to add those inserts and get the wings installed. Once those are placed and the wing bolts are attached to them, the wings can be attached and removed from boat fairly easily. We haven't bit the bullet and bought trapeze harnesses, yet. We will likely remove the wings if we get a set of harnesses and plan on using them. There's not really a point to having both (unless I were sailing solo) |

Interesting Do you cover and store inside? I have a good deal on a 16 but I guess wings are not an option Had another good deal on an 18 but passed Concern that daggers will get caught in weeds |

We don't have an indoor place large enough for the H18. We keep ours covered during the winter, though. The H18 daggerboards are pretty short. They are only about as deep as the rudders. They are also shaped so that it's easier for things to slide off them (especially if they are pulled up a bit). |
