Just recently bought a spin and pole from an 18 sx and have no idea how to install it. I have the fitting to install the bracket to the front cross bar to attach the pole and i have two extra bridle wires. Cant really find anything searching around the net. Does anyone have any pics they could send me? |

It's been 1 1/2 years since I had my spinnaker on my 18. Looking to figure it out again especially since I added wings. I can't help much as mine is a end pole snuffer. My suggestion is to look on the Hobie Tiger forum. Maybe the SX manual has something? |

Genmar, I'm thinking you don't run wings and that spin is designed to attach to the back of the wings on a sx. Did you get the launch bag with it? You may also wish to consider getting the chute recut, the sx chute is an old design, its a slow sail compared to current designs. I use a tang and a rope bail on my spin, by using a bail the comptip can take the pull better. The bail goes around and thru the sail track area where the plastic track snaps on, its pulling the entire section. I am afraid the tang alone will pull out in time. |

I did get it from a guy who had the blocks on his wings and your right I dont usually use my wings. I did get a bag for it and realize an end pole snuffer would be better ,but just want to make what I have work. Do you have a part number for the bail you used ?Could you send me some pics of your set up? |

I have a tang available. I didn't use it. I put a eyestrap on the mast, a string around the front about down a foot, tie on a Harken pully. That allows the mast to rotate. I can send pictures if your interested, or if you want the tang I'll give you a deal on it. To many small boat parts in the box. (Come to think of it, too many small boats to fix) (7).

Don't even bother putting the tang on the mast, you don't need it. Just put an eye about 1' above the bail, and then run a small piece of spectra down to a harken carbo block (the kind with the hole through the body), and then run the bail through the block. There is no need for the tang. If you want to bring the boat to Raleigh, I'll help you rig it all up. Is your SX spin off of a 1999 18sx that was damaged in a storm? |

A couple questions about the bail and recutting the spin: 1. We've read Rick White, but aren't getting improved speed w/spin on our '97 SX. How would you recut the spin? 2. I don't understand the bail set up described. If you don't mind, could you email me the pictures at jwirth1 at comcast dot net? Thanks. |

John, the sx chute is a slow sail. Contact a sailmaker about having it recut to be flatter. Its got quite a full belly. I'm still not sure my chute is set right but downwind speed is obvious with it. Mine keeps collapsing once heated up and pumping it won't refill it. I think my luff is not right, leech and foot go tight and luff still wants to collapse. I continue to tinker with it. I broke my pole last week and am searching for a replacement now so can't get pics until replaced |

I'm sure Trey can explain it better than I but I will try My mast allready had a tang mounted on the comptip so it was utilized, an eyestrap would have sufficed. Spectra or Dyneema line was used to hang a small block from the tang. Approx 6-8" down. A hole was drilled thru the sail track of the comptip, going thru the area where the plastic track snaps on. This line then goes thru the block, thru the tip and ties back to itself forming a loop. Now the load from the spin is carried to the back of the tip and the eyestrap or tang is in vertical sheer which is stronger and more likely to stay in the comptip. The block can slide left or right on the loop or bail, but cannot move away from the mast and will not prevent rotation. All the I-20s use a similar system. My Fox had a turn block on the mast and a stainless bail riveted on, it was a solid alum mast though, not a comptip. Hope this helps! |

Thanks. I came across a windsurfing mast in my travels today and it seems like it would be a good for a pole. I also have some sunfish masts and they seem like they could work as well. Again for now I will just play around with the tramp launch bag until I come across a snuffer and bag. |
