Just picked up a 1983 Hobie 18 and it needs some help on the transom has cracked all the way around. MY guess is the previous owners cams locked up and he went to beach it and it ripped it apart. I am a broke college student in utah and would like to try and fix this for relatively cheap, my plan is to cut all the broken glass away and get a piece of wood and glass that in with the metal threads on there to and maybe paint over it. I have never done any glass work on a boat/hobie cat so any information or help on what to buy for it would be greatly appreciated I want to try and buy the materials from Home Depot or Lowes. Do not buy materials from Home Depot. At the very least, go to West Marine. I would use epoxy for this repair. I would strongly suggest cutting an access hole in the deck so that you can inspect and glass the inside as well as the outside of the hull. You can seal the hole back up using a 5” diameter deck plate attached with silicone caulk and sheet metal screws. Keep in mind that this project is quite involved if you have never done any glass work. You may want to consult someone with experience if possible. If your repair fails and the transom rips off out on the water, your hull will instantly flood. sm |
