Post subject:  Jib Luff Cleat replacement
I am in the process of repairing an 83 18. I need to reattach the jib luff cleat. It appears that it was originally attached with a brass rivet. Can anyone describe the process to me? I tried to use Al rivets, but they pop out.
Your help is appreciated.

I've never had to replace the luff/halyard cleat on an 18 jib, but would it be possible to use a washer on the backside of the rivet to keep it from pulling through.

Or perhaps a small SS screw (maybe no. 8 or no. 10) with a flat washer, lock washer, and nut. Cut off the excess screw right at the nut so it is flush.

I tried using a washer on the backside, but the rivet kept pulling through. I could have used a longer rivet, but that would have left a lot of rivet hanging out of the backside.
I currently have screws listed as a last resort.

Take it to a sail loft - they replace and install batten pocket ends and sail corner plates all the time, which is the same attachment method.

Chris... Sounds like you're missing the backing plate that goes with the cleat. It looks like this:

Unless the washers are the right size, it's easy for the rivet to pull through. Depending on the application, our loft uses alum pin rivets, brass pin rivets or stainless hardware. I'm looking at a sail that has alum pin rivets in it. Pin rivets are different than the pop rivets used throughout the boat. It takes a special tool to set these. Likes kind of like this:

If you've got the backing plate and still can't get it to hold, then I'm missing something. The loft guys can probably fix in a few minutes if you can't get it to hold.

I have the backing plate. Pin rivet is what I was missing. I suspect that we have the right tool at work. I will take a look tomorrow.

I took the sail to Mariner for the repair and the guy from the loft hand drove the rivet. The fancy press was not required.
