I recently added a spinnaker to my 5.2 which is fairly close to your 18.
It has really added to my boat and is alot of fun even when sailing solo. Here is a picture, if you have specific questions just ask.

Can anyone give me any info. on rigging h18 for spinnaker or a reacher.The no.cal lake i am racing on seems to like to set the course with long runs.This is semi-favoring all the guys with chutes.Any info would help,and if someone has the setup they want to get rid of i would be in terested.(no junk please) thanks,shawn [email protected] |

I have put a spinnaker on my H-18. Homemade snuffer pole out of aluminum. I made it easy to take on & off the boat & still keep it class legal. Still working out the best sheet leads with the wings. Thank you for the info.I am still curious about the hoisting mechanism needed to raise the spin.Everyone around sacto. seems to have their boats put up for the season,i guess i need to look at a tiger or miracle that is rigged already to check out where on the mast the uphaul is located.I have been lake sailing my h16 in the no.calif. area for about 25 years on and off but i just got my 82 h18 two months ago and want to give it a go in bodega bay class racing along with all the regattas semi-close to me.Thanks again for the information |

I am not sure how the hobies are rigged by on my 5.2 i have a steel wire that runs a circle around part of my mast at the height I want to hoist to. Then above that about 7 inchs I have a block which the halyard runs through. So it runs under then wire, then through the block, then back under the wire. One end of halyard runs to the head of the spinnaker, the other runs down to a cleat at the base of the mast or the main beam. |

shawn Carl engelander in sac had an 18 with a chute on it if you ask the guys in the area maybe someone knows where it is now. possibly jeremy at surf city cats or inland sailing couls help you out. If you know mark lewis or wentzel they could also help. do you sail at folsom or where you sailing at? |

Thanks Rich,I used to do all my business with Bruce at inland sailing in the past but I heard that Bruce had sadly passed,that guy really helped me out when I was about 16 and had just gotten into sailing and my first h16.I havent been over to their new shop yet.I have recently done business with Andy and John over at windtoys in santa rosa(I drive a semi in the napa ,sonoma area every day).They have one of their A fleet guys tiger at their shop but it is tarped up good and I cant see the setup real well.To answer your question I have sailed alot at cammanche,rancho seco,rio vista,and alittle at folsom,although i always get skunked there.I recently joined fleet 281 and am going to join fleet 2 also.Any tips on other spots in the area?I heard woodward res. is worth checking out. I have been racing up at Whiskeytown lake and also belong to their sailing club. thanks Shawn |

That looks like a cool setup on you nacra,nice setup! I just hope it is going to be worth the effort to set my h18 up this way.I know I will probably not be able to keep up with a tiger or miracle but I want to at least give them a race. Thanks for the info,Shawn |

shawn i have sailed alot of those places, Woodward and rio vista are my favorites, as far as a set up i never rigged my 18 with a spin but had sailed on one. but there are a few tigers in the sac area mark lewis has one im in the eureka area humboldt bay . I hope to get out to whiskey town this year coming up i heard its nice if your in the humboldt area and want to see a tiger let me know im always up to take her out |

Shawn, My 18 is set-up as you describe. I run a SX mast with Tiger main, self-tacking jib and spin. I have an endpole system that I broke the center tube, tube is available. Its an aluminum hoop. I have the hoop, an end piece for tramp launch, the fitting for the crossbar,and the snuff bag, if you are interested. I'm not sure about my 2 point chute, may convert to three point to use with new mid-pole system. I can give you measurements and block placement. My boat is very close to the speed of Tigers and faster when sailed correctly than a SX or standard 18. Let me know if I can help you with this. Later |

I am going to be up at most of the races at whiskeytown along with one of the events they have at the klammath yaght club.I plan on trying out lots of new locations this coming year,I will shoot you a message if I get up to humbolt bay.Whiskeytownsailing.org has a web cam and info on last years events,fun group to race with and pretty lake.Just doesnt get alot of big wind like the delta gets.Shawn ([email protected]) |

That sounds like a very cool setup.I am curious about your setup,what is the difference between the h18 and the sx mast.I know it is taller but i didnt know it was the same as a tiger.I am thinking about going to mylar/kevlar sails next year anyway if it is class legal.I really dont want to put a comptip on my mast but if i have to i might as well get ahold of a sx mast or have the tip put on farther up on a regular 18 mast.I will probably keep the stock mast.thanks shawn [email protected] |

If you plan to race class legal you will need a comptip on your standard mast and cannot use pentex/mylar sails or a spin. A SX mast on a standard 18 also isn't class legal. In my area only 1 or 2 18s show for races so being class legal didn't matter to me. I race with the F18 fleet in my current configuration. The SX mast is the same height as a Tiger but has a comptip, slight modification to the Tiger main was all it needed to work. I'm looking for a used Tiger mast currently, or an extrusion that will work. |

I read some of your other pages and was intrigued by your delima about the mast step.I have no answer yet but i am checking that out.The more i check in no.calif. the situation is the same,few 18's out there racing.I really don't want to give up the perf. of my stock mast so i will probably do my one legal race with it and stick to fun races after that.The comp tip is both a weight and performance killer.Can you tell me how you like the tiger sails,is it worth considering the change over or should i use my 18 for a while and just upgrade the whole boat.My 82 is in excellent condition and i like it better than my 16,and to be honest i dont have 17000 to throw down on a tiger.I have also considered the miracle but i have heard both are very easy to damage,i love the durability of the 18,i just want to go a little faster than it goes now.I have a customer that does extrusions in sonoma for structural tents and buildings,I will give him the specs and see if he can come up with something.dont know the heat treating though.thnx shawn |
